Cornwall Food and Drink Festival ? Foodies South West

Cornwall food and drink festival preview PR release, good festival right in the heart of Truro, walking distance from station if you want to avoid exorbitant Truro car parking charges.

Anyway, I digress, pr follows:

The ninth Cornwall Food & Drink Festival will be returning to Truro on 28-30 September 2012 with a jam-packed timetable celebrating the cream of Cornish produce.

For food-lovers everywhere the festival promises a real taste of Cornwall: watch top chefs demonstrate succulent seafood and Cornish game; bite into a freshly baked pasty; savour the hoppy taste of a proper ale or treat yourself to a golden scone oozing with clotted cream and locally-made strawberry jam. The festival is destined to tantalise your tastebuds.

Ruth Huxley, director of Cornwall Food & Drink said: ?Cornwall?s culinary repertoire boasts award-winning producers and world-class chefs, and the festival is very much about showcasing this.

?We have some new and exciting plans for this year including a series of exclusive one-off events for real food-lovers and a special festival menu celebrating Cornish ingredients. The fixed price menu will be running throughout the festival fortnight at selected restaurants across the county and will allow everyone the chance to get a real taste of Cornwall.?

Cornwall?s reputation for fantastic food has grown exponentially and it is now recognised as the number one food destination outside London. The Cornwall Food & Drink Festival has cemented itself as a must-visit entry on the nation?s foodie calendar, attracting in excess of 43,000 visitors in 2011.

In the Chefs? Theatre, culinary stars will be demonstrating their talents and using Cornwall?s finest produce to cook up mouth-watering dishes. This year the theatre is sponsored by Good Energy and, embracing the eco-theme, chef Arthur Potts Dawson will be demonstrating low carbon cooking as well as some of his favourite recipes.

Two-starred Michelin chef Nathan Outlaw is the headline act and will be sharing his tips on how to create stunning dishes with the fresh seafood that is landed on Cornwall?s shores every day.

Located in the heart of Truro city centre on Lemon Quay, the festival marquee will be full of produce from across the county for visitors to taste and take home.

Cornwall Food & Drink Festival hasn?t forgotten about the kids either. There is plenty to keep children happy in their Funky Food Zone which is crammed with amazing food facts, quirky hands-on activities and all-out food fun.

Alan Goddard, managing director of Cornish Mutual, the South West rural insurer who is key sponsor of this year?s event, said: ?The food and drink sector is big business ? it is worth ?1.4 billion to Cornwall?s economy and accounts for almost 30 per cent of employment, so you can see how vital it is for us to support and celebrate the industry.

?We?re really passionate about good quality, local food and drink and we?re frequently at livestock markets and agriculture shows throughout the South West seeing the great work being done. Many of our own members in Cornwall are food and drink producers, we work with them every day and understand their business, so there was no question about us supporting the Cornwall Food & Drink Festival ? it is absolutely the right thing for us to do.?

Visitors will be able to relax and soak up the atmosphere in the Croust Bar; where they can sample local ales from St Austell Brewery; freshly made pasties from Simply Cornish and a whole host of other delicious locally produced treats, all whilst watching the masterclasses, demonstrations and talks on the Cornwall Food & Drink stage.

More information and festival updates can be found at www.cornwallfoodanddrink.co.uk.

A good day from Prostate Cancer sufferers as Arbiraterone to be …

May 16, 2012 ? 10:00

John and Owen Sharp at a recent Prostate Cancer event in the House of Commons

?

In politics, there are some great days?when what you campaign for is exactly what happens. Today?s announcement of NICE?s U-turn?on the use of arbiraterone for Prostate?Cancer sufferer is one of those days.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-18076137

Some 32,500 men are diagnosed and 10,000 men die from prostate cancer each year in England and Wales. Tests show that abiraterone would improve the quality of life for many of these men, and on average extend life by four months.

I am delighted?that the campaign to get the drug available on the NHS has been successful.? This is down to the hard work of the Prostate Cancer Charity along with the Members of Parliament who supported me in calling for NICE to think again.

The manufacturers dropping the price also made a big difference.

I blogged about arbiraterone at the start of February

http://johnleechmp.wordpress.com/2012/02/10/prostate-cancer-drug-nice-should-think-again/

And working closely with the Prostate Cancer Charity I submitted EDM 2706

http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2010-12/2706

as well as hosting an event in Parliament to spread awareness of the campaign among fellow MPs??I also pressed Ministers on the decision through Parliamentary Questions in the House of Commons.

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/judithpotts/100152360/are-prostate-cancer-treatments-being-neglected-by-nice/

Owen Sharp Chief Executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity said:

?John Leech MP has done a huge amount to raise the profile of this issue in parliament and we are extremely grateful to him for all his support.

I am certain that his hard work behind the scenes has proved invaluable to the success of this campaign.?

The news means that suitable men whose cancer has stopped responding to other hormone therapy and chemotherapy will be able to receive the drug without having to make an application through the Cancer Drugs Fund.

Hello ~ It's For You | Baby Boomer Way

?

I was getting together some gadgets for either sale or donation in my home when I discovered my family?s old Bell System Princess phone. When it was going out to be trashed at my childhood home many years ago, my daughter snatched it up and brought it home to my house (I?m not sure why, perhaps she wanted to re-use it). Memories flooded my mind and for a moment I was overwhelmed with past communication that I had on this nostalgic piece of history. I was joyous, I wept, was fearful, even cringed when some of the words echoed throughout my brain. I was asked out on dates, was dumped, and was told news of births and deaths, as well as acceptance for jobs and awards. So much news and chatter came from this cool looking object (at least it was very fashionable back in 1965), that I really don?t think I could give it up. I only wish there was a way that all of the words that were spoken and heard were still available to listen to. Could you imagine being able to hear a conversation you had with an old flame that dumped you, or learned that you are an Aunt or Uncle! Wouldn?t it be great if you were able to head the caller at the pass (break-up with them before they did it to you)? Imagine if you knew the score of a sporting event before the outcome (I?d be retired by now)? Ha-ha it could be the premise for a movie or sci-fi book! Keep healthy and fit by remembering your old phone and the conversations that took place!

P.S. my phone is model 702B that was first introduced in 1963 ?

Two New Providers Rock Israeli Cell Phone Market; First New …

May 16 2012 11:21 am

Golan Telecom Ltd., Israel?s first new mobile carrier since 1999, Monday launched its services at a press conference. The company is offering the most aggressive prices in the mobile market, based on operations in the French market and its French backer Xavier Niel.

?Maximum service at minimum price is our motto. Stop being suckers,? was Golan Telecom?s slogan at the press conference.

Golan Telecom is offering an unlimited package of calls, SMS, and internet at NIS 99 per month. It will offer up to 2 gigabits of Internet access for free, above which access speed will be limited. The package will also offer free international calls to 29 destinations.

The company will also offer a special NIS 9.99 package, which includes 60 minutes of calls, 60 SMS messages, and 10 megabits of Internet access.

Golan Telecom controlling shareholder Michael Golan said, ?The people are fed up. Today, we?re making a revolution in the mobile sector, and I hope that this will be just one important example that will spread a refreshing wind to other sectors that will build a better future for the next generation.

?Our ideal offer is simple. It begins with registration. We don?t know what we?re signing; you cannot compare.

At us, registration is only via the company?s website. Transparency is the second thing. We must stop the confusion between the handset and buying the SIM card, credit refunds in which nothing is understood. This method must be stopped; the confusion must be stopped. We only distribute the SIM card by mail. The SIM card will be sent to the customer by mail.?

Golan added that he wants to give control to the consumer.

?Our website will be central. You can join, change plans, sever ties. It?s real freedom.?

Over the past few months, Golan Telecom has established its mobile network with assistance from France?s Free Telecom SAS. In contrast to the way Mirs Communications Ltd. established its network with Nokia Siemens Networks, Golan Telecom set up its network independently with contractors, and Nokia Siemens only sold the equipment.

Meanwhile, HOT Telecommunication Systems Ltd. subsidiary HOT Mobile Ltd. also launched its services Monday, offering an all-inclusive plan of NIS 89 per month. HOT plan includes unlimited calls and SMS, as well up to 3 gigabit Internet access.

HOT?s price is NIS 10 less than the unlimited calls, SMS, and internet plan announced by Golan. HOT Mobile will charge NIS 1 per minute for international calls, compared with Golan Telecom?s offer of international calls at no extra charge to 29 selected destinations.

HOT is also offering a discount plan ?10 Agorot? a uniform charge of NIS 0.10 per minute for calls, NIS 0.10 per SMS, and NIS 0.10 per megabit of Internet access. The plan corresponds to Golan Telecom?s discount plan of NIS 9.99 per month for 60 minutes of calls, 60 SMS messages, and 10 megabits of internet access.

HOT Mobile?s prefix is 053. It says that its 3.9G GSM network is state-of-the- art, and was set up at a cost of hundreds of millions of shekels by Nokia Siemens Networks.

On Monday, in a one-sentence notice to the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange, HOT said, ?The company is honored to announce that HOT Mobile, Mirs Communications Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of the company, will today begin the sale of advanced mobile services on a 3.9G GSM network.?

HOT?s share price fell 2.6% by midday to NIS 38.41, giving a market cap of NIS 3 billion.

R. Kelly To Drop Write Me Back Album In June

Pied Piper of R&B will roll out his 11th album on June 26.

After taking a break from singing to undergo emergency throat surgery last year, R. Kelly is making an official return with his 11th studio album, Write Me Back, set for release on June 26.

“Share My Love,” the lead single from Write Me Back, was released in February and has already made waves on radio. The latest cut, “Feelin’ Single” will be available digitally on May 29. The new LP is a follow-up to R. Kelly’s 2010 release Love Letter, which was an ode to music from the ’50s and ’60s.

Back in December, Kells shocked fans when he announced that he would be adding 32 chapters to his popular “Trapped in the Closet” series, and in March it was confirmed that the series would be aired on IFC later this year. Twenty-two chapters exist thus far in the soap opera series that begins with a one-night stand and weaves into an extended tale of sex and lies, starring Kelly’s alter ego, Sylvester.

“When I first began experiencing the unknown journey of writing ‘Trapped in the Closet,’ I knew after the first chapter that I had tapped into something that was not of this earth,” R. Kelly said in a statement at the time of the IFC announcement. “Being the nosy person that I am, I more than anyone wanted to know what the second chapter would be. And now here we are at chapter 23, trapped in the million dollar question — what the hell is the package? Well, ladies and gentlemen, not only am I ready to reveal what the package is, but I have many more chapters to share.”

It’s set to be a pretty eventful year for the Pied Piper. In February, he was one of the entertainers at Whitney Houston’s funeral, performing a moving rendition of the late singer’s hit “I Look to You,” which he also wrote.

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie Take Their Kids to See Billy Elliot the Musical in London

Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie Take Their Kids to See Billy Elliot the Musical in London | Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie

Kevan Brooks/AdMedia

Nothing like enjoying a little theater in the West End while in London!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie attended a recent matinee of Billy Elliot the Musical at the Victoria Palace Theatre, a source tells us, for themselves and several of their children. (The source could not confirm which of the Jolie-Pitt kids attended the show, though seven tickets were booked in total.)

The family, who recently visited the U.K.’s Legoland together, sat in the dress circle ? not separated from the rest of the audience for the 2:30 p.m. performance. After the show, Brad and Angelina went backstage to meet Adam Vespermann, a Seattle-native, who played Billy. When it was time to go, they left via the stage door and also signed autographs for some fans who were assembled.

Marshall Fine: Movie review: Polisse

Maiwenn Le Besco’s Polisse is tough and compelling, a police drama with no real plot but, rather, a snapshot slice-of-life of a group of Paris cops coping with what may be the most demanding assignment on the force.

They are the members of the Child Protection Unit, charged with investigating everything from runaways to sexual abuse. Their daily work brings them in contact with some of society’s saddest cases because their clientele includes its youngest, most vulnerable victims.

Le Besco, who also appears in the film, was inspired by a documentary on the real CPU. She interviewed its members, then cowrote her script based on the experiences she’d been told about. Her film encompasses the day-to-day lives of the members of the CPU squad, whose cases seem to come and go with surprising speed and disheartening regularity.

We see the squad members interviewing victims and perpetrators, coaxing or browbeating confessions or statements. A little girl will casually mention that, while bathing her, her father “scratches” her bottom. A teen offhandedly mentions offering sex in exchange for a cell phone; a mother dragged in for shaking her baby viciously in public says that her older son (who looks to be about 3) is easier to get to bed at night when she gives him a handjob.

In between, we get a taste of the interaction between the members of the squad – between the group as a whole and between partners. It’s obviously intense work, creating similarly fraught bonds between colleagues. One pair – played by Marina Fois and Karin Viard – shares secrets about their personal lives, serve as each other’s confidantes and, ultimately, wind up with bitter recriminations against each other.

The humor of these officers, however, is defensive, combating the tragedy and absurdity of otherwise unsettling situations. It’s gallows humor, to be sure – and it usually accompanies those rare moments when the squad is able to prevent a tragedy, rather than clean up after one.

The tension sometimes derives from struggles within the precinct itself. It might be the departmental hierarchy (the narcotics squad is given preference over CPU) or the commander’s unwillingness to step in to make a difference when he might. Each member of the squad brings his or her demons to the job; it’s hard to tell what might set an officer off.

Le Besco also offers a glimpse of the home life of the officers, where spouses have no interest in hearing about life on the job. But these are cops who can’t help bring their work home with them. It could be anything from a raid on a gypsy encampment to take the children – who are being trained as pickpockets – into custodial care or watching a rape victim give birth to stillborn child, from which DNA will be taken to charge her attacker.

The director has a large and varied cast, all of whom bring different facets to the job. Fois is the tightly strung cop who urges Viard to leave her unfaithful husband, while hiding her own anorexia. Joeystarr is the mixed-race tough guy with a tender heart for abandoned children. Frederic Pierrot is their long-suffering squad leader, who must serve as buffer between hot-tempered cops and their chilly chief (Wladimir Yordanoff).

The film’s one flaw is Le Besco herself. She plays a photojournalist who is embedded with the CPU to shoot their daily doings. At first given the cold shoulder, she gradually is accepted, becoming involved with one of the squad members. But her presence distracts from, rather than illuminates or adds to, the reality of the film.

Without her, the film might be 10-15 minutes shorter and even more headlong than it is. Even so, Polisse is gripping and powerful, an unsentimental look at a thankless job where the victories are hard fought and all too rare.

Faced with Breivik’s unflinching account, Norway surprises world with its civility

A reporter covering Anders Behring Breivik’s trial marvels at the degree of civility Norwegians have shown him, considering the brutality of the July 2011 terror attacks and his lack of remorse.

In the first two weeks of Anders Behring Breivik’s trial, the Norwegian man reiterated his conviction that he did the right thing when he killed 77 people on July 22, 2011 ? even if it meant shooting unarmed Labor party youth members as young as 14 trapped on an island or bombing government buildings in Oslo. Those killed were??legitimate political targets,? he said.

The attacks were ?gruesome but necessary” for preventing Labor from continuing to undermine Norwegian society with its lenient immigration policies, Mr. Breivik said. The party had betrayed the country by promoting the Islamic colonization of Norway and ipso facto the ethnic cleansing of indigenous Norwegians. He would do it all again, he said.?

International onlookers have been shocked to see how civil the whole trial is proceeding, given the scale and brutality of his crimes ? together they are?the worst national tragedy the country has experienced since World War II ??and Breivik’s lack of remorse.?

On April 16, the first day of the 10-week trial, a lineup of prosecutors, forensic psychiatrists, and the legal counsel for the victims all approached Breivik in court to shake his hand. Wearing a suit and neatly trimmed beard, he politely extended his right hand to greet them. Outside, people lined up orderly to enter Oslo District Court. There was not a single sign denouncing him, nor any banners calling for the death penalty.

On the second day of the trial, he was allowed to begin his six-day testimony of what happened in the years leading up to the attack, including his preparation for that day. At the end of the first week he recounted, in chilling detail, of how, after packing a ham and cheese sandwich that morning, he shot and killed 69 people at the Labor party youth summer camp on Ut?ya with a Glock pistol and Ruger semi-automatic rifle.

If this all sounds surreal, that?s because it is.?

It is surreal to see a well-dressed upper class man sit in a court and calmly explain how he killed Norwegians to prevent Norway?s demise. It?s incomprehensible to hear how a man, who supposedly had all the economic means and generous provisions of a cradle-to-grave welfare system, could turn into Norway?s most notorious killer in modern times. And that is part of what scares Norwegians: the thought that he is one of them.?

Despite the atrocity of his crimes and his behavior, Norwegians still want to see him get a fair trial. But that means?he has a legal right to explain himself in court, even if there is a risk that he spreads his propaganda. The trial is also key in determining Breivik’s sanity, which is at the crux of this case. The prosecution even defended his right to keep reading from his prepared speech on his first day of testimony in spite of protests from the legal counsel for the victims, who were offended by his one-hour long monologue.?

HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter

If the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter ($99.99 direct) succeeds at nothing else, it significantly redefines the features you should demand in an inexpensive inkjet printer. Suitable for both home and office use, it’s a good fit in the dual role of home and home office printer, as a shared printer in a micro office, or as a personal printer in any size office. It’s also the hands-down winner as budget priced Editors’ Choice for any of these roles.

In addition to fast printing with reasonably good output quality across the board, the Officejet 6100 offers both Ethernet and WiFi, along with USB of course. And as with the more expensive Editors’ Choice HP Officejet Pro 8100 ePrinter ($149.99 direct, 4.5 stars), the ePrinter in the name indicates more exotic connection options as well, namely: support for printing from iOS devices over WiFi with Apple AirPrint and for printing through the cloud with the free HP ePrint service. The HP ePrint Web site assigns the printer an email address, which lets you print documents by sending them to the printer as email attachments.

The Officejet 6100 also earns points for its 250-sheet input capacity, instead of the more typical 100 or 150 sheets at this price. Not surprisingly, however, you don’t get a duplexer (for printing on both sides of the page) and there’s only one paper tray. If you want to print an envelope, say, you’ll have to swap out the paper in the tray first.

Basics, Setup, and Speed
At 7.1 by 18.4 by 15.3 inches (HWD), and only 10.6 pounds, the Officejet 6100 is both light enough for one person to move easily, and small enough to share a desk with. Setup is typical for the breed, with an extra, mostly automated, step for registering the printer with ePrint.

For my tests, I connected to a wired network and installed the drivers on a Windows Vista system. On our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic’s hardware and software) it came in at an effective 3.6 pages per minute (ppm). That counts as a more than respectable speed for the price. The somewhat more expensive Editors’ Choice Epson WorkForce 60 ($129.99 direct, 4 stars), for example, was only a little faster, at 4.1 ppm.

The Officejet 6100 also scored well on photo speed, averaging 1 minute 8 seconds for a 4 by 6 photo. That’s not much slower than the OfficeJet Pro 8100, at 52 seconds, and almost twice as fast as the WorkForce 60, at 2:12.

Output Quality and Other Issues
Output quality for the Officejet 6100 is at the low end of par for an inkjet overall, but still good enough for most business and personal needs. Text lacks the crispness that you’d get from a laser printer, and I wouldn’t even consider using it for, say, a resume. For day to day business use, however, you shouldn’t have any complaints unless you have an unusual need for small fonts.

Graphics quality is easily good enough for most home use or for any internal business need, including PowerPoint handouts for example. I saw banding in some full-page graphics, but it was relatively subtle with most color fills, and didn’t show at all with some. I also saw a loss of some thin lines, but that’s a common issue, and the Officejet 6100 does better on this score than many printers. Colors in photos were a little oversaturated, but roughly a match overall for the low end of what you’d expect from drug store prints.

Ultimately, the Officejet 6100 offers a lot to like. It?s fast for both business applications and photos, it delivers reasonably good quality across the board, and it offers a higher paper capacity than most printers at this price. It also lets you share the printer over a network, print from iOS devices with AirPrint, and print from anywhere and any device by sending documents as email attachments. All this adds up to making the HP Officejet 6100 ePrinter a strong contender as either a personal printer or shared printer at home or in a micro office, and also makes it Editors’ Choice.
